Huawei has launched the Y7 Prime

Huawei has launched the Y7 Prime in Hong Kong. The big highlights of the device are its 4000mAh battery, Android 7.0 Nougat, and a fingerprint scanner at the back of the smartphone. The Huawei Y7 Prime seems to be another variant of the Enjoy 7 Plus launched in China earlier, and is priced at HKD 1,880 (roughly Rs. 15,500). The smartphone is available to buy at Vmall and is coming to Three soon.

The Huawei Y7 Prime ha a sleek metal unibody with no home button in the front, and on screen navigation buttons. The fingerprint scanner sits at the back right below the camera sensor, while the 3.5mm audio jack is seen at the top edge of the smartphone. The volume and the power keys are both housed at the right edge of the device. In Hong Kong, it has been made available in Silver, Grey and Gold colour variants.

As for specifications, the Huawei Y7 Prime runs on Android 7.0 Nougat and supports a hybrid dual-SIM slot. It sports a 5.5-inch (720x1280 pixels) IPS display with 2.5D glass protection. It is powered by a 1.4GHz octa-core Snapdragon 435 SoC paired with Adreno 505 GPU and 3GB of RAM. The smartphone offers 32GB of internal storage as well with the option to expand further via microSD card (up to 256GB).

In the camera department, the Huawei Y7 Prime sports a 12-megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 aperture, PDAF, and LED flash support. At the front, there is an 8-megapixel sensor for selfies with f/2.0 aperture. The fingerprint scanner is claimed to have the accuracy of 0.3 seconds. As mentioned, it packs a 4000mAh battery, and connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.1, GPS, FM radio, and a Micro-USB port.

WhatsApp in talks with SBI and NPCI for payment

The messaging app, owned by American online social networking company Facebook, is in talks with the State Bank of India, the National Payments Corporation of India and a few other financial institutions to integrate payments on its platform.

Messaging application WhatsApp has initiated discussions with Indian banks and other institutions to allow its users to make payments via United Payments Interface (UPI), which facilitates instant fund transfer between two bank accounts on the mobile platform. 

The messaging app, owned by American online social networking company Facebook, is in talks with the State Bank of India, the National Payments Corporation of India and a few other financial institutions to integrate payments on its platform. “Due to the complexity of the architecture, WhatsApp is in discussions with the State Bank of India, NPCI and few other banks to devise ways to integrate their systems with the bank and with NPCI,” a senior SBI official said on condition of anonymity. 

“We are currently at the ‘proof of concept’ stage, looking at ways to integrate it with our back-end.” Launched by erstwhile Reserve Bank of India Gover nor Raghuram Rajan in 2016, UPI is run by NPCI. WhatsApp is in early discussions with several Indian banks, which could work with the messaging app service to implement UPI on its platform, bank executives said. 

With UPI allowing instant settlement of funds between peers, all banks need to do is to integrate their systems with WhatsApp, which can identify the correct recipient, they said. “A messenger works in a manner of identifying an address box where the messages travel to instantly. Similarly, UPI instantly settles funds between one account holder and the other,” said a senior executive, who manages payments at a private sector bank. “WhatsApp will identify the recipient and the UPI layer will allow funds to get settled between two parties.” 

Similar technologies have been adopted by apps such as Truecaller, which has worked with ICICI Bank to implement UPIbased payments. Hike Messenger, too, has started UPI-based payments in collaboration with Yes Bank. It has done so through a wallet licence from the RBI. While messaging applications can allow instant and easy transfer of funds, banks are concerned over security of data in the process involved. 

Some security protocols will need to be implemented around payments through WhatsApp. If it decides to use Aadhaar, then we will have to enable biometric authentication,” said another executive. 

Discussions also pertain to the manner in which consumers will be able to access the payment method, whether it will be done through WhatsApp or appear as a payment mode in the payment gateway page. UPI, which has been at the heart of the government’s push towards digital payments after demonetisation, clocked 17.8 million transactions amounting to about Rs 7,000 crore in 2016-17. WhatsApp, on the other hand, has 200 million users and a huge potential for enterprise solutions as well. 

“There is a certain amount of trust and familiarity factor associated with WhatsApp, with so many people using it. Hence it has a huge potential,” said Bhavik Hathi, managing director, Alvarez and Marsal Transaction Advisory Group, a Mumbai-based consultant. 

“It will also allow instant payments for businesses working through social media like Facebook.”

On the first call, he was reassured that the stunt was going according to plan — that he would make it out alive the next day. The other 25 calls to his friends went unanswered. At the end of them all, the 17-year-old was dead.

Khati, from Kurar village in Haryana’s Samalkha, had volunteered for the “daredevil” stunt on June 24. At 10 pm that night, over 11,000 residents of Chulkana village, 30 km from Khati’s home in Panipat district, had gathered around the freshly dug pit on an empty patch of land. Jagdeep alias ‘Kalia’, the 25-year-old organiser, was busy collecting cash from onlookers. After the collection reached Rs 8,500, the villagers urged him to start the event. They promised to shell out Rs 2,000 more after Khati came out alive.

And so, the show began. The 5-feet, 9-inches tall Khati was given a phone and put inside a jute sack, which was fastened with 21 knots. Amid massive applause, the sack was lowered into the pit. Jagdish and seven of his associates then placed several wooden planks on top of the sack and covered it with sand. A massive puja followed and an earthen pot and a few red threads were placed near the covered pit.

At 10 pm on June 25, when Khati was pulled out, he was unconscious. The doctors declared him dead at the local hospital.

“When I was told that a boy named Sumit was performing such a stunt, I didn’t know it was my grandson. When I went to the ground in the morning on June 25, I realised who he was and begged the organisers to pull him out. But they said it would be a bad omen if he was taken out before 24 hours,” says Shakuntala Devi, 60, Khati’s maternal grandmother who stays in Chulkana.

At Khati’s two-room, rundown home in Kurar, his mother Poonam, 45, and father Mam Chand, 44, a daily wager, are struggling to come to terms with their son’s death.

“He refused to study after Class 5 and would just sit at home. Five months ago, he joined Jagdeep and his friends and help set up lights during jagrans. They would perform stunts like breaking bottles on their heads while riding a cycle, but not like the one they performed in Chulkana,” says Chand.

Khati was the eldest of Chand’s three children, including another 14-year-old son and a 10-year-old daughter.

Chand’s second son shows a video of that evening moments before Khati was buried. “He seemed so happy,” says Chand, before snatching the phone.

“On June 16, Jagdeep and seven other boys came to our home and urged my son to perform the stunt for Rs 600. I thought it was a cycle stunt. He left that night and it was the last time we saw him. At 3.30 am on June 26, we got a call from police informing us about his death,” says Poonam.

“I always told him to avoid the company of Jagdeep and his friends but he would never listen. I wish he had attended school like my other children,” she says, between sobs.

A few metres away, at Jagdeep’s home, his two-sister-in-laws, who are busy preparing lunch, have little idea why the police have arrested him. “He didn’t get along with the family. He would take part in tamashas and jagrans. That is all we know. On June 26, the police came and arrested him. But I am sure he will be released. I heard that Mam Chand’s boy died during a stunt but how could that be Jagdeep’s fault? Even Sumit didn’t get along with his family,” says Jyoti Rane, 32.

“Such shows are common in villages around here. We have stopped many of them, but nothing of this kind has ever happened. These boys had no permission and even panchayat members were not in the know. We got a call from the hospital at 1 am on June 26 informing us about the boy’s death,” says assistant sub-inspector Rameshwar, the investigating officer.

An FIR has been filed in Samalkha police station on Chand’s complaint, following which Jagdeep, and two of his associates, Ankit and Satbir of Kurar, were arrested. “The boy did make some calls from his phone. The case is still under investigation. We are also planning on making two more arrests,” says Rameshwar.

At Chulkana, very few are willing to talk about the incident. The pit has been filled, but the earthen pot and the red thread lie nearby. “The entire village was here — men, women and children. We were very excited. But no one anticipated such a end. When Sumit’s body was being pulled out, we were all cheering. But when the sack was untied, he was unconscious,” says Amit Kumar, 18.

Back in Kurar, Poonam pulls out a passport-size picture of her son. “Bohot tagda ladka tha, satrah saal ka tha par lagta bees ka tha (He was a strong boy. He was 17 years old, but looked 20). I am sure he would have fought hard to come out, but these people killed him for money,” she says.

Ultimately, the search giant notes, “It’s a really quick way to check out all-new music that’s tailored just for you.”

Google is certainly no stranger to personalized music suggestions. As it stands, you can have Google Music Player send you song suggestions based on where you are or why you’re listening — that means that if you’re hiking, you’ll get a different playlist than if you’re trying to crank through a difficult project at work.

But this is the first time that Google has taken personalization and applied it to the discovery of new music. Some users have actually had access to New Release Radio for quite some time. Thanks to Google’s partnership with Samsung, a number of Samsung users served as early adopters (and really, guinea pigs) for the latest feature. New Release Radio is apparently found throughout Google Play Music, or if you want a more direct way to access the feature, simply search “New Release Radio.” Google noted that the station is free to all listeners (whether they pay for Google Music or not) and the station will be updated with the latest music releases on a regular basis.

OnePlus 5 is the new flagship from the company, which will launch in the summer, and most people are assuming this means the June timeline. Leaks have also claimed June 15 will be the launch date for OnePlus 5, but so far the company has not confirmed the date.

In his Weibo post, Pete Lau says that when the OnePlus 3 had launched many in the media were talking about how thin the flagship was, but he does on to add, OnePlus 5 will be the thinnest flagship phone. His post says, ” OnePlus 5 I believe it is the thinnest flagship phone, and did not sacrifice other use experience. This is the daily pondering, and constantly adjust the value of the output after 0.05mm,” if you go by the Google Translation.

OnePlus 5 will feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, and the company has already confirmed this. The OnePlus 5 will thus end up being the first smartphone to launch in India with the Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835; remember the Galaxy S8 from Samsung runs the company’s own Exynos 8895 processor in India.

OnePlus 5 will feature 6GB RAM and 64GB storage along with an option for 128GB storage as well.
